One Code to Rule Them All. One Line to Bind Them.
It is the last eleven hours of civilization as we know it, and Matt Dunston is pissed off. Lia Bellamy was assassinated five minutes ago, blown to a cloud of molecules in his face. She was a war hero programmer on a post-apocalyptic Earth full of cyberpunks and battle-worn climate survivors. Her open source brain dust—human augmentation nanochips—held the promise of a future of freedom, creativity, and peace. Without her, the Singularity is barreling down on humanity like a boulder about to crush a bus full of kids.
The Decimal-Percenters are going to own the Singularity by forcing their version of dust into the lungs of millions at 11 am tomorrow. People will become superhuman . . . as long as they don’t mind the back door into their brain.
Matt's not a programmer, but he thinks a few hours should be plenty of time to unleash his rage on the Decimals, and then delete their code and prevent worldwide mental slavery.
The Last Breath eBook Charlie Magee
Finally! A cyberpunk story with characters I would actually want to hang out with. I'm damn tired of the gifted street urchin; here are some real people with real flaws caught in crazy situations that require actual grit and determination to get out of. The beginning seemed a bit slow because there was so much unfamiliar stuff going on in this not-so-far-off future, and so many cool characters to meet, that I hate to focus to make sure I was picking it all up. After about thirty pages in, though, I was off and running. This book pushed me along at high speed and it actually had a few new twists on the AI and gamer and coder themes. The surprises were great and they kept coming. The writer obviously knows a few things about programming, but he's not as good at it as his characters, so there were a few moments where he finessed it. Fine, really, because I wasn't there to learn how to code.
I hope someday someone creates the game world that is happening within the threads of the plot. Seems like it would be awesome fun. I gave it a 4 because I never rate anything a 5. I hope the other comes out with book two pretty soon. It was a satisfying end, but the hanging bits make me want to get back to the characters because they don't seem to have a clue what's coming next. There are a few clues, but I'm pretty sure my guesses will be wrong.

The Last Breath eBook Charlie Magee Reviews
The Last Breath was very stimulating! The characters were so vividly portrayed, I could feel them - the attractive, along with the ones I despised. He crafted the storyline to unfold at just the right tempo, fast and furious from the first page to the last. Altho sci-fi is not my genre, I found myself turning page after page as the author weaved an intense love story throughout the book. It was an awesome read.
Wow, what a wild ride! It was very difficult to stop reading and if not for my family needs I would have read it non stop. If this is your genre of choice then block some time and hang on! Few books have hooked me like this one, and this is not my preferred genre. This is a concoction of techno sci-fi, street smart humor and love story all well shake, not stirred, and meticulously re-arranged to curl your toes! I am eagerly anticipating the next book!
I've been reading sci-fi since I first learned to read and was thrilled to be transported by this story to the point where all else was blocked out. A much needed time of therapy! The imagery, the concepts, the mind-blowing adaptation to technology, evolutionary leaps, and the ideas of how future social/economic/basic income concepts could materialize.... all of it had my head spinning in the most delightful way. I really liked all the characters and hope to get to know them better.
I like the way the story unfolds in a natural way and information becomes understandable as the novel progresses. So many writers spoon feed to give the information that's needed to their readers and it becomes predictable. Magee takes us fully into the future with all its devices connected to human desires and it seems it won't be too long until we have O Vibe and mosaic apps on our smart phones. It seems that Magee has been to the future and is reporting back in amazing detail. A great read.
Taut, imaginative and compelling. Once you’ve started, there really just isn’t a good place to stop reading. I can hardly wait for the next book in this series.
Complex and pretty out there, this was a greatly entertaining read! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and couldn't wait to continue reading to find out where the story was going. While some of the sci-fi/technology-type verbiage was a little foreign to me, I didn't worry if I couldn't fully picture exactly what that particular crazy type of technology looked like or how it functioned because the story was interested and intriguing, and I was so rapt with what was going to happen next. Can't wait for the "next" book to find out where this story goes from here.
The Last Breath is a hell of a ride. Just when I thought I could predict the outcome of a scene, the author completely took me be surprise, going in a totally unexpected direction. Throughout my reading experience it was nice to have actual geographic locations tied in to the chapters. I enjoyed the creative visuals in scenes that were apart of the both the virtual and futuristic settings. Each character felt familiar and seemed as if they could be written as a villain or hero, which made following their relationships and interactions complex, yet satisfying. I don’t typically have time to sit and read many books, yet with this book I could hardly wait to get lost in it’s pages at night and melt away my busy daily reality. As I finished the final pages of this book, I realized that it’s sub-title, "Book One of the Next," was going to be a test of my ability to patiently await the next chapter in what was the most enjoyable part of my summer The Last Breath.
*My decision to rate this book 4 out of 5 stars is solely based on the fact that I don't currently have any other science fiction books to compare it to.
