This is such a gripping read!! Once again, I couldn't put it down. I can see why Scott's first novel has been nominated for five national awards. In so many mysteries, the good guys are smart and right and clever, but they're just as sleazy and inhumane as the bad guys. But Cynthia is human, and comes within a hair of getting herself killed in this novel because of it. It has all the essentials of a great mystery, with the added dimension of a profoundly human main character. I hope there are many more Cynthia Westbrook mysteries in the future!Product details

Voice from the Shadows A Cynthia Westbrook Mystery H Scott Butler 9780692349397 Books Reviews
H. Scott Butler has burst into the mystery genre with all his bags packed. He sets the hook in the first three lines and keeps it baited for over two hundred pages. You feel Cynthia Westbrook's pain as she relives the horror of finding her mother murdered--stabbed repeatedly with a butcher knife--and then forced to run for her life. She is assailed by the black of night in a dense woods with a maniacal murderer so close she can hear his breathing. Blood trickles down her back from where he sliced her. Fiery pain fills her being, but she cannot make a sound. She holds her breath until her lungs are about to burst. What's not to like about that?
Scott penetrates the psyche of his characters with the skill of a surgeon and the cunning of a PhD psychiatrist. The reader wants Cynthia to survive and to return to Mr. Right before he gets tired of waiting for Cynthia to purge her present of her bloody past. Cyndy is a dogged sleuth but one who seems unmindful of the peril she weaves around herself. Just like when she was a young girl, she has wakened a psychopath and lured him back into the same dark, tangled woods. And she is bleeding . . . like her mom did.
I ask again What's not to like?

Once again (as with Night Journey), I couldn't put this novel down until I'd finished it! This second appearance of Cynthia Westbrook as both detective and human being is even better than the first (and that was great!). H. Scott Butler's Voice from the Shadows is extremely well written and tightly plotted. I highly recommend this wonderful novel (be sure to read Night Journey first, too).
Fleeing unwanted public attention following her exploits in H. Scott Butler’s marvelous first novel, Night Journey, Virginia sheriff’s investigator Cynthia Westbrook now heads south to her Alabama hometown in search of the man who killed her mother twenty-four years ago. Some in the local media have taken to calling the book-loving Westbrook the “literary detective,” and Butler’s own love of great works shows through to good effect. If the thread that connected Night Journey came from Robert Frost, this time it’s Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, and not simply because the determined protagonist is the only child of an unwed mother. Cyn’s quest for closure becomes a personal struggle with memory. There are memories retrieved at great cost to herself and others; memories lost to flood, dementia, and the inevitable return of all human beings to the chemicals of which we were composed in the first place; the selective memories of a child-like savant; and ultimately memories resisted from inside the protective embrace of the kind of “magic circle” Hawthorne invented to insulate Hester Prynne from the judgmental world about her. A fine bit of psychological characterization, Voice from the Shadows is also a fully satisfying mystery. The prose is lean, the characters finely observed, the plot deftly crafted, and the suspense builds steadily until the minute it explodes in a violent dénouement we didn’t see coming. Don’t miss this one.
